Type 301 is a modified austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that offers excellent strength and ductility when cold worked. It is a variation of Type 304, with reduced chromium and nickel contents to expand the range of cold work-hardening. This allows for higher tensile strengths to be achieved through rolling, while maintaining good ductility compared to Type 304.
When annealed, this grade is essentially non-magnetic. However, cold working increases its magnetic properties compared to other standard austenitic stainless steels.
Type 301 exhibits corrosion resistance similar to Types 302 and 304 in most mild service conditions. It has excellent resistance to food service requirements and atmospheric corrosion. Stress cracking resistance is comparable to Type 304. The best corrosion resistance is achieved when the grade is cold worked and then annealed. However, if Type 301 is heated or cooled slowly within a temperature range of 800 - 1600 °F (427 - 871 °C) without subsequent annealing, carbide precipitation may occur, leading to intergranular corrosion.
